Lila, the color of Love

The story of a little girl who remembered how to fly.

by: Eduardo Blanco

Once upon a time there was a little girl, her name was Lila and she lived in the massive city of Mexico DF at the beginning of the 1800s. Lila had a little brother whom she adored and called him ‘Puddle’ and played with him all the time. Her mother was a bitter woman who had been coupled very young in an arranged marriage with some stranger coming from the Arab worlds and now Father of little Lila and tiny Edward. She always resented not being able to marry the love of her life for not being rich enough for her own family that ‘sold’ her to a better suitor.

Stories say that Father used to be a prince back in his lands but the greed of his brothers took everything away and declared war. Father not wanting to fight with his own blood, gave all the power and lands away and moved as far as possible, completely distraught, sad, and empty handed. All he took with him was all that he was inside.... always a Prince.

Lila’s mother didn’t like her very much because she reminded her of how sad her own childhood had been and now the story was repeating itself, all over again.

However little Lila always felt special; She hardly remembered her father who had died when she was just a baby but she engraved in her heart the love and the words -”My little princess, always remember who you are & fly high”- that he used to say to her every time he came close to say goodbye in the mornings on his way to work or to say good night when coming back late and night. Either way, she was always half sleep and this made her father lived forever between reality and dreams.

The day he died, he came to visit little Lila in her dreams and said - ”My dearest Princess, I got something to do and you do too. It is important that you always remember who you are, don’t let anyone tell you otherwise, look up to the stars and when you’re ready to fly over to your favorite one and I’ll be there waiting for you with all my love”

Little Lila grew to be a sickly child. Doctors and medicines were always needed. Her mother didn’t have the money and her father didn’t leave much when he died. The money was running out and the three of them couldn’t do much about it. This made the relationship between the Mother and the child very difficult. Mother blamed her for taking all the money for medicines and remedies while she could hardly had anything to eat or anything decent to wear.

One day, tiny Edward already a three year old child told her sister - Fly my Princess, Fly away! These words shocked little Lila to the core. Her father’s words but how? He never met him, he died even before Mother knew she was pregnant with him?

  1. -What are you saying Puddle? Who told you that? Fly where? how? Oh Father, please extend your hand from heaven and lift me up, I’ve forgotten how to fly and I cry for days and days. Every night she opens her window and lifts her arms to the sky in the hope that her Father will take her away from that miserable life to find their beautiful kingdom where both could rule happily ever after.

However, happily ever after never came. Tiny Edward one day stopped talking and nobody knew why. With no apparent reason he simply went quiet one day. Little Lila knew that it was her fault and her inability to remember who she was and how to fly.

She became a sad little girl, doing the chores at home, helping her Mother in silence. Not playing with her brother anymore did she almost loose all the hope.

One day, out of nowhere ‘Puddle’ talked again. - Fly my Princess, Fly away! he shouted in his dreams. This time she was sure that it was a message from Father. She felt so happy, her chicks glow with a pink color never seen before over her face. Her eyes sparkled and she promised to never ever forget her most important job: To always remember who she was and to fly away... always.

Little Lila became a beautiful flower, a sparkling young woman with her eyes filled with hope and love. Married the love of her life and taught her own children how to fly.

Tiny Edward became a pilot in the Army forces and started his own military school

The Father knew his job here was done. That night the brightest star fell from the sky and with tears of the joy they all said standing in different parts of the world. “We will meet again one day Father”

Moral of the story:

KNOWING HOW TO FLY, DOESN’T MEAN TAKING TO THE SKY,

IT MEANS NOT BEING AFRAID OF FALLING TO THE GROUND.
